Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand,
occupying a beautiful position in the Doon
Valley. This beautiful City is known as the
gateway to Mussoorie and the Garhwal
interiors. The town is also known for being
one of the most ancient in India. Before the
city came under the ruling of the British
government, it was ruled by the Mughals,
Sikhs and Gurkhas. It is 230 kilometers in
the North of Delhi, capital of India. The
holy River Ganga and Yamuna criss-cross city
quite beautifully. Dehradun was a division
of Uttar Pradesh, before the existence of
Uttarakhand. Later on, the city came into
the State of Uttarakhand, India.
The city has a rich and ancient history.
Dehradun is also a proud possession of
Uttarakhand, aptly referred to as the
life-blood of the state as well. It is a
corrupt shape of 'Dera' which indicates a
temporarily site. The other term 'Dun' was
derived from 'Dronashram'. Dronashram was a
residential place for Dronacharya of
Mahabharata (a Hindu epic). The terms 'dun'
and 'Doon' stand for the low-down areas in
the foothills of the mighty Himalayan
ranges. Hence the place is called Dehradun.
The climate of Dehradun represents a
sub-tropical atmosphere with cool winters,
warm and a pleasantly cold spring is the
best season for the sightseers to reach
Dehradun and enjoy the environment there.
The summer months are hot and monsoon stays
tough. Due the mountainous region the town
also includes a sufficient amount of
snowfall in winter.
